I am so proud to host this annual community service project that benefits the residents of our local nursing home. Being a Stampin’ UP! demonstrator has given me the opportunity to meet so many lovely, talented and generous crafters in our community. All of whom have given so much to the project. For the last 5 years we have gathered as a crafting community, created 120 handmade Christmas ornaments and cards, one for each resident at the home. It’s tradition to then meet at the home on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to gather together at the tree trimming celebration.
This year our theme was childlike and playful. We wanted our friends at the nursing home to recapture those childhood Christmas memories. What better way than with personalized stockings all decked out on their dining room tree. The Tags and Trimmings Bundle was the perfect suite of products to use for both the stockings and the cards. One of my sweet volunteers even cut out and painted that sweet gingerbread man we used as the tree topper. I told you I had some really talented ladies in my crafting circle.
The highlight of the day is visiting with the wonderful residents at the home. We’ve been around for a few years now and they know and love us. This is a feeling that cannot be described. I am humbled by their gratitude and sheer joy when they see us enter the building. During the tree trimming celebration, we trimmed the tree, sang Christmas Carols, visited with each resident in the facility and I might add shed a few tears of joy. My father, a local citrus farmer, even donates bushels of Satsumas for us to pass around to each of the residents. They couldn’t wait to peel the juicy locally grown oranges and taste all that Plaquemines Parish sweetness.
At the end of the holiday season, when the tree is dismantled, each resident receives their ornament as a little keepsake. I can’t begin to tell you how many rooms we’ve visited and have seen all the past ornaments on display. We are making a difference, hopefully a very positive one.
I don’t know where to start in thanking the scores of volunteers that helped with this year’s project. Hours upon hours of designing, cutting and assembling had to take place before we could give this last hooray. I am blessed to have such wonderful people in my life. Stay tuned though, because we will be visiting the home again next week to create a hands-on holiday wall hanging with our friends that they can proudly display in their rooms. They love when we visit the art room and they are able to create with us.
Until next time, Create Something Beautiful!
